Our cumin is complex, featuring an earthy and piney fragrance. Grown near the Rann of Kutch desert in intense temperatures, these seeds contain high volatile oils, delivering richer and bolder flavors to any dish.

With smoky and herby characteristics, this cumin leaves a lingering taste on the palate and beautifully complements the fruity flavor profile of our Resham Patto Chili.

To enhance soil health, our partner farmer rotates crops throughout the year, cultivating traditional garbanzo beans, peanuts, sorghum, pearl millet, and pomegranates!

Our commitment to delivering safe and pure spices goes beyond the standards set by the FDA. Each spice is lab tested and certified to be free from harmful chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, coloring dyes, heavy metals, and microbial residues.

Our partner farmer Devji Patel, from Dungala in Gujarat

Devji comes from a family of multi-generational farmers. He is eccentric and the only farmer in his village and surrounding areas to grow cumin organically (not an easy task by any means – more on that later). He makes his own natural fermented microbial culture (which smells horrendous), uses vermicompost, cattle manure, rotates crops seasonally, and more to create a biologically active soil that feeds micro-organisms which continuously improves the soil structure. He hopes to inspire other farmers to pick up organic farming.

"My idea of cumin's flavor was forever changed when I had Banas cumin. The potent scent can be felt without even opening the jar." - Mara F.

Founder's note: Homage to my ancestors

Cumin holds a very special place in my heart. It is deeply connected to my identity and countless memories. My paternal grandfather, who was a farmer like our ancestors, grew cumin along with other crops on his farm.

Growing up in India, I was fortunate to experience the freshest cumin every year, straight from my grandpa’s farm at the first harvest. When our neighbors and friends tasted our cumin, they would not want anything else, often saying it stood out from anything available in the market. This set a very high standard for me as I went onto finding the cumin that could match the excellence of my grandfather’s.

After over 2 years of extensive research and effort, which involved meeting several scientists, contacting over 350 farmers, visiting 16 different villages across all 11 districts renowned for cumin cultivation in Gujarat, meeting 38 farmers, and exploring their farms under scorching heat (over 113 F), I finally found what I was looking for. The aroma and flavor of this cumin served as a reminder to my grandpa’s cumin. I truly hope this has made him proud.

We sincerely hope you adore Banas Cumin just as deeply as we do - Dharti
